Head Coach  Clyde Alley  Asst .Coach. Charles Brown

This was Coach Clyde Alley’s first year in Pahokee.  He had a squad of untried material.  Rodney Connell was a great halfback with tremendous speed and a great break away runner.  Thomas Dickson played full back and was a good
runner up the middle.  He made a lot of points for the Blue Devils.

Frank Gillis was small but a great ball player.  He was a great blocker and a fine defensive player.  He made the classic
shoe string tackles on defense.

Frank “Jelly roll” Tillis was the heaviest fellow on the squad.  He weighed 200 pounds and played tackle.  He was
probably the strongest boy ever to play at Pahokee High School.  Kyle Hatfield played at center and he had that
“never say die” spirit and he excelled on defense.  The team had its ups and downs and the worst game played was
against Ft. Pierce in which we were beaten 39-0.

The 1946 Pahokee team was one of the greatest teams in the history of the School.  They averaged 15 points
per game on offense but gave up only 3.3 points per game on defense.  They had a record of 8 wins, one tie,
and one loss.

In the first game against Ponce de Leon the Blue Devils scored on a third plunge by Thomas Dickson.  The
second touchdown was scored by Milton Salvatore who intercepted a pass and ran 43 yards for a touchdown.
Wilber Geiger kicked both extra points for a 14-13 win by Pahokee.

Against Miami Tech half back Frank Gillis made a 25 yard run to the Tech’s five yard line.  Thomas Dickson bucked
the middle for a touchdown.  Rodney Connell took a double reverse for 65 yards, and a touchdown to win 14-0.

It was the great quick kicking of Wilber Geiger that enabled Pahokee to gain a scoreless tie with the heavier Palm
Beach High. The game was played with a 7,000 crowd, the largest crowd ever to see Palm Beach play.  Both teams
made serious threats but both defensive teams rose to the occasion and stopped the offense
in their tracks.  Pahokee 0 - Palm Beach 0.

Delray was leading 7-6 at the end of the first period.  Then Pahokee caught fire in
the second period.  Rodney Connell scored three touchdowns and Thomas Dickson
scored two touchdowns to make 31 points in twelve minutes.  Final score  Pahokee 37-Delray 14.

In the third period William Weathers crashed through on the Ft. Pierce 22 yd. Line
to block a kick and Pahokee beat Ft Pierce 2-0 on a safety.

In the fourth period Pahokee marched 77 yards to beat South Broward 7-0.

Full back Thomas Dickson going the final three yards to score and Wilber Geiger
kicking the extra point.

Frank Gillis made a 50 yard run to score.  John Ogle blocked a punt for a safety.
Thomas Dickson scored from the three yard line.  Rodney Connell made a 24 yard run for a
touchdown.  Rodney Connell ran 65 yards for a touchdown.  Frank Gillis
picked off a pass and ran 70 yards for a touchdown.  Lake Worth won the first
half of their game.  In the second half Rodney Connell picked off a Lake
Worth pass and returned 35 yards.  Dickson scored from the I yard line.  Pahokee
drove from the 24 yard line and Dickson scored from the 11 yard line.  With
Dickson, Gillis, Geiger, carrying the ball, Pahokee scored from the H yard
line in the 4th quarter to win by 20-6.

Pahokee scored 7 points in the third period and 19 points in the 4th period to beat
Melbourne 26-0.  Thomas Dickson rushed for 133 yards in this game.

In the final game without the services of ace half-back Rodney Connell,
who was injured, Pahokee lost to Belle Glade 13-0.

Julian Snyder made a 75 yard run from scrimmage to break open the game and beat Delray.
It was the longest run of the season for Pahokee.

A big disappointment for the Pahokee fans was the game played with the Lake
Worth "Trojans" on November 14.  Just when things were turning for Pahokee,
the ball was lost on the Lake Worth 6 inch line.  The reminder of the game
was fast and exciting but resulted in a 6-0 victory for Lake Worth.

Pahokee played Ponce de Leon on November 21.  There was only one touchdown
made in this game and in Pahokee's favor.  Joe Kent Carr bucked over for
the touchdown, grinding out a long drive, led by Connell and Snyder.

Last but not least on the Pahokee schedule was the game with Belle Glade.
Every year when the teams clash, there is a final burst of energy and a
deep resolution to win or bust.  Hueston Connell made the longest run of
the game for Pahokee's only touchdown.  When the final gun sounded the
score was
Rams 14-Blue Devils 7.

Pahokee lost 13-6.  Joe Kent
Carr Pahokee Q.B. scores to tie Delray
Beach 6-6.  Connell was leading ground gainer against Lake Worth with
Teddy Johnson throwing key blocks.  Pahokee was unable to catch Lake Worth
as the score read Pahokee 14 and Lake Worth 25.  The Blue Devils climaxed
an otherwise average season by doing what most people thought was
impossible: upsetting the three touchdown favored Rams.  This was
accomplished by no individual player, but by the splendid teamwork,
playing and spirit of the boys.

When Coach Clyde Alley called the Blue Devil squad out for pre-season football training he looked
over his inexperienced material, knew a rough season was ahead, and said as much.

After dropping the opener to Clewiston 19-6, on September 23, the Blue Devils gave
their followers plenty of encouragement by playing a spirited game with Ponce de Leon on September
28, holding the Cavaliers to a scoreless tie until the last 12 seconds when a lucky pass plus a conversion
gave the contest to Ponce 7 to 0. The season then dragged on with a succession of defeats
until November 4, when the Blue Devils trampled the visiting Largo team 27 to 0.

Following this contest Pahokee tied Stuart 0 to 0 and lost to St. Theresa before squaring off with their
traditional rivals, the Belle Glade Rams, in the annual Glades gridiron classic.  The Rams had a strong
aggregation, which was expected to score in this season’s final just about as they pleased.  Such was
not the case.

In this game the Blue Devils gathered their entire defensive strength and quickly punctured the confidence
of the Rams. Though unable to marshal any impressive offensive power, they completely befuddled the
jittery Rams until the fourth quarter, when they recovered their equilibrium in time to force over two touchdowns
and win 12 to 0.

Carney Wilder was a fine passing quarterback-completing 81 passes out of
127 attempts.  His favorite receivers were Ronnie May, right end, who
scored 14 touchdowns and had six called back due to penalties, Bobby Peacock,
the other end made sensational catches of short passes, mostly one handed catches. He played like a pro
and was hard to bring down.  May was great on
the long pass with tremendous speed down field.  Wilder would throw for the
goal line and May would run under the ball to grab it on his finger tips
without breaking stride.

Lake Worth had a strong team but the game was postponed to Saturday night
and the Pahokee coaches found a flaw in their defense and ripped them 30-0.
This was unbelievable to the fans but Maynor called the shots before the game
and assured the townspeople that he would win, and he did. Seacrest fell to
the Devils 26-0 with Peacock making incredible catches.  He caught
several passes with five defenders around him leaping into the air and
bringing the ball down one handed.  Billy Turbeville, Pahokee safetyman,
made a sensational punt return of 70 yards for a touchdown.

Pahokee played South Broward in the afternoon after a storm.  Pahokee threatened several times but
was unable to score. South Broward had tall ends and their quarter back Kiki Wise ran all over the field
throwing some elevator type passes over Pahokee’s short safety men to beat us 12-0.  We lost a heart breaker
to the well-known Ft. Pierce luck.  Pahokee was leading 13-7, with a few seconds left when Ft.  Pierce shifted into
their famous single wing passing formation.  They ran an end run to right side and Ft. Pierces tail back threw a
long pass deep to the left end to beat Pahokee 14-13.

Pahokee was leading Belle Glade 12-0 at the half.  May made two great catches for touchdowns.
Belle Glade evidently scouted Pahokee well at the South Broward game.  They started throwing high
looping passes to their tall ends and the score was tied 12-12.  Then Belle Glade made a fatal mistake.
They called time out on the extra point.  They had a deadly kicker but the pressure was on. The two minute time
out made him nervous.  He kicked the ball a mile wide and the game ended 12-12.
He would have made the point if the coach had not called time out.

Who completed nearly 80% of his passes?  Carney Wilder
